Hardie Board and Batten

Hardie Board & Batten

Board and batten exterior siding dates back over 200 years in terms of the design. Originally it was created with wood panels, but as time has passed and products have improved, Hardie board and batten is more popular than ever before. The construction is unique and beautiful. Adding the design creates a whole different dimension to a home that is likely different than any other house around the neighborhood.

If you find yourself drawn to a farmhouse style design then board and batten siding is an excellent choice when designing the exterior of your home. The barn-style choice will add a modern charm, and a unique appearance with clean lines and multi dimensions.

Fiber Cement Board and Batten Siding

To create the board and batten exterior siding design we first have home-owners choose their Hardie fiber cement board. Once those specified choices are installed perfectly, then we cover the seams with thin strips of Hardie batten. Therefore, creating a layered effect. This technique not only covers the seams of the boards but elevates the siding and creates a truly beautiful layered exterior surface.

Adding the batten strips to the Hardie boards create a weathertight seal against any wind, rain, or damaging hail. Additionally, the boards and batten strips are very long-lasting. Especially if you choose James Hardie fiber cement siding (our recommendation). When doing so, you can rest assured that you will have an exceptional warranty up to 30 years. Your siding will also be termite resistant, storm proof, fire resistant, and will not rot and corrode.

Wood Board and Batten Siding

As mentioned previously, originally board and batten siding was installed with wood boards. Dating back over 200 years. Farmers would hang wood to side the exterior of their barns. When wintertime rolled around they started feeling a slight breeze and much lower temperatures. So, their way of combating the insulation issues were by adding batten strips to layer over the boards. This helped tremendously but as we all know now insulation has come a long ways since then too.

Wood siding is traditional and certainly does make a home look fantastic. Over the years we have come to realize that wood comes with it’s own set of troubles for home-owners. It can rot, corrode, become damaged during heavy storms, and it is highly flammable in the event of a fire. Termites and other pests unfortunately love to infest wood as well.

As the years have passed many different types of siding have been produced to mimic the wood appearance. James Hardie siding has done a terrific job in doing so with their fiber cement siding. Their wide variety of panels come designed to look just like wood. The best part about the improvement is the longevity and durability. So, if you want the traditional board and batten wood siding appearance, we highly recommend you go with fiber cement to ensure your home is properly protected.
