Asphalt Shingles Roofing

Roof Insurance Claim

Asphalt shingles are one of the most common types of roofing material in the Austin area. Additionally, due to the fact that we do not incur many strong wind storms, asphalt shingles are certainly a very good choice for your new roof or replacement roofing project.

Not only are the asphalt shingles popular but they have been around since the early 1900s. Therefore, giving many businesses and home-owners peace of mind that they are installing a quality product.

Types of Asphalt Roof Shingles

Asphalt shingles come in a variety of colors, shapes, and textures. Also, you will find that the shingles have a choice of composition make-up. The two options are organic and fiberglass shingles.

Organic Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles made up of organic material are first constructed with an organic base. The composition is typically paper, wood fibers, cellulose or a combination of a similar substance. Next it is doused in asphalt to create a waterproof layer.

Due to the organic matter, the shingles end up with a less than desirable fire resistance effect.

Organic shingles constructed prior to 1980 at times contained asbestos. Therefore, fiberglass shingles were introduced and have been the most popular since then.

Fiberglass Asphalt Shingles

Fiberglass shingles made their debut to eliminate the use of asbestos in the 1980s. By 1982 fiberglass shingles dominated in choice over organic material.

The anatomy in fiberglass shingles is a simple layer of glass fiber particles, bonded with resin, and then saturated in asphalt.

Asphalt Roof Fire Rating

Depending on the choice of the type of asphalt roof shingles will determine the fire-rating. Asphalt shingles are rated on a scale from A (highest) through C (lowest) or at times including unrated which we highly recommend that you stay away from.

Unfortunately, organic shingles are not rated the highest. The organic shingles rate at a level C fire resistance rating. Alternately, if you go with our recommendation, fiberglass shingles come in with an A in fire resistance rating.

Asphalt Shingles Advantages

Asphalt shingles have a wide range of qualities that far outrank other roofing materials. Not only are they an industry standard, furthermore they are an industry preference. The reasons being that there are far more advantages than there are disadvantages.

Durability

Shingles last much longer in areas where the weather is consistent. This holds true for shingles installed in Austin. Surprisingly, this is one of the advantages of the temperatures remaining high nearly year-round.

Eco-Friendly

Recycling asphalt from shingles has become increasingly popular over the years. Once properly broken down, the shingles can be repurposed into roads or pavement surfaces.

Easy to Repair

Hopefully it will take many years before any repairs are necessary. But, things happen. The good news is that it’s fairly easy to recognize needed repairs and also pretty easy to consult a professional for said repairs.

Appearance

Beautiful curb appeal regardless of what style, type or color of shingles that you may choose with the numerous options available. The design is classic and looks great for decades.

Low Noise

During strong storms certain roofing materials tend to make a lot of noise. Metal roofs are one example. During a rain storm the sound can be unbearable for some. Alternately, asphalt actually dampens the outdoor sounds.

Sun Reflecting

Shingles reflect solar beams off of your home. In turn, this helps keep your energy bills down. As Texans we all know that every little bit helps when it comes to keeping your home cooled off. Especially during the summer months.
